“I’m well done. Turn me over!”

I came across an amusing Christian tradition while researching material for my post on Luther's 95 Theses.

In his 95 Theses, Luther mentions one St. Lawrence, a 3rd century believer who was responsible for using church funds to feed and clothe the poor.Related image

The hostile Roman government under Emperor Valerian heard about these "treasures of the church", and a local Roman Prefect summoned St. Lawrence to demand tribute.

St. Lawrence appears before the Roman Prefect and promises to return tomorrow to lay before him all the treasures of the church. The Prefect gleefully accepts.

The next day, St. Lawrence returned with the all the Church’s wealth and treasure: He brought out the poor!

He tells the Roman Prefect,

"Behold! In these poor persons the treasures which I promised to show you; to which I will add pearls and precious stones, those widows and consecrated virgins, which are the Church's crown."

The Roman Prefect, angered he won't be confiscating any riches, decrees St. Lawrence be put to death.

The Roman Prefect has a gridiron prepared, placed over hot coals, and ties St. Lawrence to it for a slow, torturous death.

According to tradition, this is the gridiron used to roast St. Lawrence, on display at the Church of St. Lorenzo (Lawrence) in Rome.

Now here's where the story gets...strange.

After St. Lawrence had suffered for many hours over the hot coals, he cheerfully declares,

"I'm well done. Turn me over!"

...and because of this, St. Lawrence is known to this day as the patron saint of cooks, chefs…and comedians. ಠ_ಠ

Grandpa Tevye and the Cowboy Religionists

(Hey, that sounds like a great name for a band! )

The recent debate about the role of Judaism’s traditions in the lives of Messiah’s sheep reminded me of the classic Kineti post, 10 Religious Types to Watch Out For.

In particular, during the recent debate, we saw scandalous amounts of Grandpa Tevye and The Cowboy Religionist:

  • Grandpa Tevye: Ah, tradition! There is an inexplicable art, spiritualism, and beauty in the traditions of the elders within a structured religious environment. Each year you do X, Y, and Z, and that is spiritually quenching. To live a Godly life is to perform the traditional customs. You oppose all those crazy Cowboy Religionists. You do it the correct way, like they used to… you know, in The Good Old Days, back when all things were right with God, the world, and religion. You’re speaking, of course, of when religion was done right: In the Middle Ages. Or in the 1st century. Or in the Temple period. Or in Moses’ day. For you, the grass is always greener on the yesteryear. No need for all this new fangled relationship talk; that heartfelt thing is overrated. As for spontaneous prayer and worship…gah, that’s for the crazy Pentecostals. Living for God means doing the traditions.

  • The Cowboy Religionist: You don’t need no stinkin’ traditions! You throw out 3000 years of historical prayers, literature, worship, liturgy, ceremony – those ancients were all fools, and you’re the enlightened one. You’ve successfully rebelled from Grandpa Tevye and made your own way. You do things your way. A cowboy religionist. You do your own thing, which will eventually become a custom, and then a tradition… until someone else throws out your traditions, repeating the cycle ad infinitum.

We even saw hints of The Purist and Ye Olde Ancient – oh yes! Go checkout the rest of the 10 Religious Types to Watch Out For, and have a good shabbat.

A Jewish lawyer was troubled by the way his son turned out…

And now for a little lighthearted fun.

A Jewish lawyer was troubled by the way his son turned out, and went to see his Rabbi about it.

"Rabbi, I brought him up in the faith, gave him a very expensive bar mitzvah, cost me a fortune to educate him. Then he told me last week that he has decided to be a Christian. Rabbi, where did I go wrong?"

"Funny you should come to me," said the Rabbi. "Like you, I, too, brought up my boy in the faith, put him though university, cost me a fortune, then one day he came to me and told me he has decided to become a Christian."

"What did you do?" asked the lawyer.

"I turned to God for the answer," replied the Rabbi.

"And what did he say?"

He said, "Funny you should come to me..."

Bilateral Ecclesiologists announce discovery of Messianic who gives a turd

(With apologies to Yegge.)

The worldwide Bilateral Ecclesiology community met up over wine coolers today to celebrate their unprecedented discovery of a Messianic who gives a turd about Bilateral Ecclesiology.

On Tuesday, chief Bilateral Ecclesiologists issued a press release blog post revealing that 28-year-old Seth Tritte, a Messianic gentile at Congregation Beth Shalom in North Carolina, actually gives a turd about bilateral ecclesiology.

"Mr. Tritte has followed every single one of our blog posts for years," the press release stated. "Probably even this one."

Prominent Bilateral Ecclesiologist Lee Derek explained how they had stumbled on the theoretical possibility of Seth Tritte and his persistent interest in Bilateral Ecclesiology. "We knew that there are precisely 38 people who give a turd about Bilateral Ecclesiology," said Derek, "because every Bilateral Ecclesiology-related post gets exactly 38 “Likes” on Facebook. But there are only 37 of us on our mailing list, so we figured there was a lurker somewhere."

"That, or it was a miscount of the No Gentile section at our congregation," Derek added. "But we don't, uh, like to dwell on, I mean with gentiles in our congregations, we can, um... sorry, I need to get some water."

As Derek stumbled off in a coughing fit, his fellow theology inventor Jean F. Kraine outlined their basic dilemma: "Finding a person who gives a turd about Bilateral Ecclesiology is an inherently difficult problem. It's similar in scope and complexity to the problem of trying to find a tenured rabbi who didn't have the bulk of his work done before ignorant One Law laypeople. So even though we suspected Tritte existed, we needed a strategy to smoke him out."

He explained the trap they set for Tritte: "We crafted a fake satirical blog post lampooning Bilateral Ecclesiology as a harmful, wall-building, divisive theology -- a writing task that was emotionally difficult but conceptually trivial. Then we laced the post with deeper social subtext decrying the endemic superficiality of One-Law Messianics, to make ourselves feel better. Finally, each of us “thumbed-up” the post, which was unexpectedly contentious because nobody could agree on what the “thumb-up” button actually meant in a communal expression which has no way to affirm the unique calling of Jewish people in the broader Jewish, Christian, and Messianic worlds."

"And then we waited to see who, if anyone, would give a turd," he said.

Kraine concluded, "Our elegant approach didn't work, so we hired some brute Messianic gentile to go dig up the personal details on all 38 accounts that had ever “thumbed up” a Bilateral Ecclesiology post, and the only one we didn't know was Tritte. So we reached out to him, and thankfully so far he hasn't started his own One Law congregation."

Tritte says he is pleased to have been recognized for his apparently unique turd-giving about Bilateral Ecclesiology. "I've been giving a turd about Bilateral Ecclesiology for as long as I can remember. I follow all their blogs and teachings and podcasts closely, just in case I ever get the urge to practice Bilateral Ecclesiology for something someday."

"It's a beautiful, elegant theology," Tritte observed as he busied himself cleaning a fingernail. "You'd be hard-pressed to find a more identity-preserving, racially-distinct core set of beliefs. And they've made astounding advances over the years in extending clear boundaries upon their peripheral, already-marginalized gentile congregants, may their numbers ever decrease.”

"I'm kind of surprised I'm the only person on earth who gives a turd about it," Tritte continued. "I'd have thought there would be more people following the blogs closely and then not practicing Bilateral Ecclesiology. But they all just skip the blogs and go straight to the not practicing it part." Tritte shuddered at the possibility of a gentile uttering a blessing intended only for Jacob’s children.

"People see words like exclusive identity marker and clear ethnic boundaries," Tritte continued, swatting invisible flies around his head for emphasis, "and their Giving a Turd gene shuts down faster than a Bilateral Ecclesiology synagogue with a Messianic gentile at the door. I'm really disappointed that more Messianics don't get actively involved in reading endless threads about how to preserve identity markers and subvert gentile inclusion to accomplish basic crap you can already do in regular Messianic congregations. But I guess that's the lazy, ignorant, immature world we live in: the so-called 'real' world."

Bilateral Ecclesiologist Oliver Antoine remains hopeful that one day they may be able to double or even triple the number of Messianics who give a turd about Bilateral Ecclesiology. "I believe the root cause of the popularity problem is Bilateral Ecclesiology’s lack of support for a well-thought-out liturgical service. If we can create bilateral liturgy that is perceived as sufficiently sexy by Messianics, then I think we will see an uptick in giving a turd, possibly as much as a full extra person."

Bilateral Ecclesiologist aficionado Sasha Runembach is not quite as sanguine as his colleague Antoine. "I doubt Bilateral Ecclesiology will ever be appreciated by the uneducated natives of the Messianic world. As exciting as it is, the discovery of Tritte should be considered an anomaly, and not as a sign that more people will ever give a turd. Messianics only seem to pay attention to things when there is humor involved."

"We do have experimental humorous piyyutim," added Antoine. "But it doesn't seem to be getting much adoption. Bilateral Ecclesiology fans just don't see the need for it."

Gif’s Law of Teh Crazies

Hello, fine blog readers, hope you had a good weekend.

I have a new internet law formulation to share with you. It is borne out of many years of intarweb page viewing.

Are you ready? Brilliant. Here it is:

The amount of crazy in an individual is directly proportional to the number of animated .gif images on his or her personal webpage.

That is to say, the more of Teh Crazy a person has been infected with, the more flashing animated images on his personal web page.

If that’s making your brain hurt too much, here’s a diagram that illustrates this formulation:

GIF's Law of the Crazies

As you can see, the more animated .gif images one has on his or her website, the more likely they are to be batpoop insane in the membranes.

Case in point:

Texe Marrs’ website.

Texe Marrs'

This guy is a religious guy, a Christian, but with conspiracy theorist leanings that go so far to say “the Zionists” are evil harbingers and leaders of the New World Order. His website offers the sale of his numerous nutty books, as well as some old Nazi favorites like Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a well-known forgery attempting to paint Jews as the root cause of all the world’s problems. Gif’s Law of Teh Crazies correctly predicts this man to be bat-poop insane crazy; his animated .gif image count racks up to 12 on his home page alone – that’s off the charts! That’s more than an asylum’s fill of Teh Crazy.

Oh, but Gif’s Law of Teh Crazies applies to more than just religious people. Take a look at British car dealer Ling Valentine. Ling is a woman – as far as we can tell – but she’s just a little…umm….out in left field? Before I point you to her website, please be warned it may cause seizures and partial blindness, hardening of the eyeballs, blind spots, and may trigger severe allergic reactions, causing your eyes to bleed. You may wish to wear protective goggles, and have your significant other standing next to you in case you seizure out. Ok, ready? Here it is:

Lingscars.com

Ok, ok, I’m sorry! Please forgive me for burning those permanent images into your forever-scarred eyeballs!

Gif’s Law of Teh Crazies correctly predicts Ling to be off the charts on the scale of crazy. Too many animated .gif images to count! On that website, thar be dragons I wish ne’er to disturb.

What websites do you visit, fine blog readers? Do you run any websites yourself? Always keep in mind Gif’s Law of Teh Crazies, lest you find yourself in the Intarwebs loony bin ghetto heap. ;-)

Blog-as-philosophy paper

MIT's Guideline on Writing a Philosophy Paper: “pretend that your reader is lazy, stupid, and mean.”

In fact, you can profitably take this one step further and pretend that your reader is lazy, stupid, and mean. He's lazy in that he doesn't want to figure out what your convoluted sentences are supposed to mean, and he doesn't want to figure out what your argument is, if it's not already obvious. He's stupid, so you have to explain everything you say to him in simple, bite-sized pieces. And he's mean, so he's not going to read your paper charitably.

What wisdom in this guideline! And not just for writing philosophy papers, this is true even for blogging and internet discussions.

When in a discussion, I usually shoot for the most concise words I can use. Nothing more. Without this, people pick apart your argument and split hairs.

Example:

Me: "I'm celebrating Israel's 60th anniversary."

Them: "Peace is the way to go, man, and Israel is a violent, racist nation. Are you saying you love war, celebrate the death of Arabs, and are a racist?"

Me: No.

Notice the antagonist putting bait out there with all kinds of inflammatory language. How tempting to write a full essay refutation!

I could respond with paragraphs about how wrong that view is and how terrible a worldview that demonizes the world's only Jewish state.

Alas, had I said, "No, because X...", the antagonist would invariable find fault over X.

So we assume the reader is impatient and uncharitable and will pick the worst possible interpretation of our words; we answer as succinctly as possible, in this case, a single word of dismissal!

When writing, omit unnecessary details. Then before committing, remove all but the essentials. Useful for brevity; also for preventing lazy, stupid, mean readers from nitpicking your argument to death! ;-)

The original forty-three-page summation of the case for cleanliness, accuracy, and brevity in the use of English.

As Strunk & White's Elements of Style put it,

13. Omit needless words.

Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell."

Eliminate all but the essentials to withhold ammunition from your antagonist.

That said, during the last 5 years of writing on this blog, I’ve really enjoyed writing for, arguing with, learning from, and talking with you lazy, stupid, mean fine blog readers.  Here's to another 5!

Adam's Payment

Hat tip to Hebrew4Christians

After Adam was created, there he was, all alone, in the Garden of Eden.

Of course it wasn't good for him to be all by himself, so the Lord came down to visit.

"Adam," He said, "I have a plan to make you much, much happier. I'm going to give you a companion, a help mate for you -- someone who will fulfill your every need and desire. Someone who will be faithful, loving and obedient. Someone who will make you feel wonderful every day of your life."

Adam was stunned. "That's sounds incredible!"

"Well, it is," replied the Lord. "But it doesn't come for free. This is someone so special that it's going to cost you an arm and a leg."

"That's a pretty high price to pay," said Adam. "What can I get for a rib?"

Real Preachers of Genius

It's good to laugh, ain't it?

I found this "Purpose Driven Life" parody absolutely hilarious.

The "Purpose Driven Life" movement in the modern Protestant Church is based on a book by Rick Warren, a Protestant Baptist who has attempted to make Christianity more palatable to the masses.

For my non-United States or non-TV watching blog readers, this is a spinoff of the famous "Real Men of Genius" beer ads here in the United States. The parody by Steve and Kathy Gray, both Protestant ministers themselves, pokes fun at what some see as abuses of the Purpose Driven Life movement.

Heheheh....while you're there, have another laugh and check out Church of the Living Dead.

Hollywood influence worldwide

Myself and an Indian man having a half-serious conversation over at CodeProject:

Vunic: The planets may actually have an impact on people or anything on earth. Most of us would think that these planetary control thingie is ridiculous but we may have to believe it soon. Because, even the moon control the tides, the ocean->a liquid, a thing in the same state inside our brain controls our stability. And so schizophrenic patients go mad2 on these moon-controlled days-> Full moon day and new moon day. And that's why the Christians have made a link between their werewolves, vamps and the moon.

Me: Huh? I don't think that's a Christian thing, Vunic. The Christians I know of look at werewolves, vamps, and that kind of thing as scary movie material, not reality.

Vunic:
But in old scriptupres dont we see sainthoods holding a cross against a werewolf? or I saw them in vanhelsing lol.

Me:
You saw it in Van Helsing. Ahhh...good old Hollywood shaping our view of the world.

(Have a great Sabbath folks - time to relax from work! Thank God for that -- that's one commandment I always enjoy; God knew what he was doing with Sabbath! Now, if only I could pick His brain about those werewolves...
