My younger brother showed me this song called Abwoon, Aramaic for Father. The song is a Aramaic musical rendition the famous Lord's Prayer.
What's interesting to note is that Jesus most likely spoke both Hebrew and Aramaic. Syrian-Aramaic was a common language in Israel during Jesus' time, so it's quite likely he spoke this language in addition to His native Hebrew. It’s conceivable the original Lord's Prayer was in Hebrew or Aramaic, just as this song has it:
Or listen to it on Chavah Messianic Radio: Savae - Abwoon.
The first half of the song is the chanting of the prayer, the second half is sung. Sounds very different than our western music, that's for sure. :-)
One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples."
He said to them, "When you pray, say:
Abun d'bashmayo
Neth kadash ishmoch
Tithe malkuthog
Nehwe sebjonog
Aykano d'bashmayo
Of bar'o
Hab lan laghmo d'sunkonan yawmono
Washboek lan ghauwbayn
Waghtohain
Aykano dof ghnan
Shbakan lghayobain
Oelo ta'el lan lnesjoeno
Elo fason lan men biesho
Metul diloch ie malkoetho
Oe ghaylo teshbughto
Hoel 'olam 'olmien
Amien
In English,
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
On earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
And deliver us from evil.
[For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
Now and forever. Amen.]
A number of Messianic artists have also done custom renditions of the Lord’s Prayer, often mixing Hebrew and English:
Actually, it's quite likely Jesus also spoke Greek. He came from Galilee "of the Gentiles" -an area with a lot of Greek immigration and a lot of Jews did speak Greek even in Jerusalem (the book of Acts records the issue over Greek speaking widows suffering discrimination in the early Christian community). It's interesting that a number of the Apostles have Greek names and the likelihood is that some of the conversations recorded would have been in Greek. It's not hard to imagine that the teaching would have been in both Greek and Aramaic, with simultaneous interpretations for some. For comparison think about the linguistic situation in say Switzerland, Wales ...

Folks, I updated the post to have the links fixed. The media player and the mp3 download both should work now.
ReplyDeleteShalom Judah!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading the posts... I've just recently found out about the Dead Sea Scrolls and have purchased two volumes by James H. Charlesworth.. Have you heard of him?
Anyway~ I'll be back reading more!
I very much enjoyed them!
Q. Do u keep Sat. as Shabbat or do you keep it by the moon. (Lunar)
Just curious.. If u have mentioned it in previous posts.. sorry I missed it.. :)
Shalom,Shalom ~
"YIHI ADONIENU MOREINU VE RABEINU MELECH YAHSHUA HA MASHIACH LE OLAM VE AD"
which means "BE FOREVER and EVER OUR TEACHER, RABBI and MASTER KING YASHUA HA’MASHIACH”
L'Chaim~
Elisheva
Shalom Elisheva,
ReplyDeleteYes, I have an English translation of the Dead Sea scrolls. Very interesting stuff!
A. 7th day Sabbath; I haven't seen Scriptural support for months restarting the sabbath as the first of the month.
That said, I do follow God's calendar described in Scripture, which is lunar. In Scripture, cycles of the moon indicate the beginning and end of months, but not necessarily the Sabbath.
Blessings in Messiah.
Shalom!
ReplyDeleteI too follow the Lunar cycle.. In doing so~ Counting.. the 7, 14,21,28 day become our Shabbat.. Of course the evening before those days it starts..(evening to evening..)
Have you read any of the Apocalyptic? Or "The Lost Books?"
I'd like to invite you to a website that is almost like Myspace, only its filled with those that love Yeshua and follow the lunar cycle.. Some do it as you, other like me.. Nevertheless, its likeminded people..
Its by invite only .. If you wish to check it out, please email me with your privite email address so that I may send it to you. You can fix your page up and add any writtings!
There is also another in which you could check out..
U have a very awesome way of teaching in your writtings. I do enjoy them. IT would be an honor to have you!

Shalom Judah..
ReplyDeleteForgive me if I have offended or frightened you.. Being that we live out in the middle of no where, bare country.. I tend to get very excited meeting likeminded people, as you can imagen, there are not many of us.. I am happily married to my best friend of 10 yrs. we have four children in which I homeschool.. I luv to read things dealing with Torah and scripture.. needless to say, keeping in mind that i must be cautious in all things..
Just wanted to share this with you..
Shalom, Shalom my friend.. My Yahweh keep you and bless u.. and may HE continue to be your cloud by day and pillow of fire by night to guide you in all HIS ways..
Elissa
Shalom,
Elissa
